Historically, industrialisation, capitalism, and affluence have contributed to the emissions that are warming the planet’s atmosphere. As humanity starts to grapple with the Herculean challenge of climate change, should economic growth be abandoned to stand a chance of success? Would this lead to a better society, especially in already rich nations, freeing them from pointless consumerism? In Growth for Good, Alessio Terzi takes these legitimate concerns as a starting point to draw the reader on a journey into the socioeconomic, evolutionary, historical and cultural origins of the growth imperative. Rather than simply stating impossibilities, the book draws a credible agenda to enrol capitalism in the fight to stave off climate catastrophe. Shelving command-and-control solutions, or the complete reliance on, the market, Terzi details a plan involving an activist government, proactive business, and engaged citizens.
Meet our speakers and chair
Alessio Terzi (), a lecturer at HEC Paris and Sciences Po Lille, is an Economist at the European Commission. Prior to this, he was a Fellow at Bruegel, the leading European economics think-tank, and a Fulbright Scholar at the Harvard Kennedy School. He also has work experience from the European Central Bank.
Anna Valero () is a Senior Policy Fellow at 杏吧论坛's Centre for Economic Performance, Deputy Director of the Programme on Innovation and Diffusion (POID) and an Associate of the Grantham Research Institute. She completed an ESRC Innovation Fellowship in 2021, obtained a PhD in Economics at 杏吧论坛 in 2018, and was a Research Director for the 杏吧论坛 Growth Commission in 2017.
Angelo Martelli () is Assistant Professor in European and International Political Economy at the 杏吧论坛 European Institute. He worked as a Consultant for the Jobs Group of the World Bank, as a Policy Fellow for the Open Innovation Team of the UK Cabinet Office and HM Treasury and as a Technical Expert for the IMF.
