There has been a huge increase in discussion of racial capitalism, linked both to a revisiting of anticapitalist analysis and of the legacies of colonial violence. However, the framing of racial capitalism can become a way to freeze analysis - as if the same circuit of dispossession and violence continues across time and space and, with the desperate implication, for always. In this talk, Gargi Bhattacharyya considers the changing violences of racial capitalism and considers how can we use this language to identify emerging patterns of racialised dispossession, and what might we then do about it.

Meet our speaker and chair

Gargi Bhattacharyya () is a Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the UCL Sarah Parker Remond Centre, Institute of Advanced Studies. Gargi writes and teaches on issues of inequality, social justice and state practices. Publications to date include Dangerous Brown Men, Crisis, Austerity and Everyday Life, Rethinking Racial Capitalism and the multi-authored Empire’s Endgame.

Bart Cammaerts is Professor of Politics and Communication and Head of the Department of Media and Communications at 杏吧论坛.
