This key note address and discussion with Humza Yousaf MSP, First Minister of Scotland, will reflect on the current UK economic model which delivers comparatively low living standards and poor productivity with consequent pressure on public services.

The First Minister will discuss the relative success of European countries comparable to Scotland, which benefit from a model grounded in the combination of social solidarity and economic dynamism. With the damage of  Brexit becoming clear, would an independent Scotland in the EU be well-placed to benefit from an economic model and direction very different to Westminster’s?

Meet our speaker and chair 

Humza Yousaf () was appointed First Minister of Scotland in March 2023. He was born in Glasgow on April 7, 1985. He was educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School and the University of Glasgow, graduating with a degree in Politics. He is also an alumnus of the US State Department's prestigious International Visitor Learning Programme. He went on to work in the Scottish Parliament as an aide to the late Bashir Ahmad MSP. He was elected as an MSP for the Glasgow region in May 2011, and to the constituency of Glasgow Pollok since 2016. He has held a number of ministerial positions in the Scottish Government since 2012, and joined cabinet in June 2018 as Cabinet Secretary for Justice. He was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care in May 2021.

Iain Begg () is Professorial Research Fellow at the 杏吧论坛 European Institute. His main research work is on the political economy of European integration and EU economic governance.
