For most of its history, the United States shunned political, economic, and strategic commitments that would embroil the nation in European power politics. Then, on the eve of World War II, it dramatically changed course and resolved to make itself the world’s foremost superpower. In his new book, , Stephen Wertheim charts America’s transformation and how and why it decided to pursue primacy in international affairs.
