Trade Policy Hub to deliver India Market Access Cross Sector Study for British Government

25 February 2021

The Department for International Trade (DIT) and the British High Commission in India have commissioned the Trade Policy Hub to undertake a cross sector study on UK-India market access. This project is to produce evidence to support efforts aimed at further strengthening the UK-India trade and investment relationship by fulfilling the following objectives:

  • Assessment of UK-India trade in each of the priority sectors by identifying market access barriers and opportunities across the identified sectors and analysing the impact of these market access barriers;
  • Assessment of the opportunities and routes to remove prioritised market access barriers for UK exporters/companies, provide options for addressing such barriers.

Priority sectors include: Agri-Tech, Chemicals, Food & Drink, Financial Services, Professional Business Services, Creative, Sports, Urban & Infrastructure, Technology & Innovation, Energy, Defence, Healthcare & Life Sciences, Aerospace, Space and Advanced Engineering.

In order to capture priority barriers, their scale and scope for removal, TPH is undertaking targeted stakeholder consultations with businesses, business associations and experts in India and the UK. The consultations are an opportunity for stakeholders to feed their experiences and expectations into the study and the UK-India Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), and highlight opportunities and challenges in their specific sector or field. It is a crucial time for UK-India relations and therefore, an excellent opportunity for stakeholders to feed into the policy-making process.

The study team, led by Project Director, Professor Sangeeta Khorana and Lead Researcher, Dr Elitsa Garnizova, can be reached via research.trade.policy@lse.ac.uk or e.v.garnizova@lse.ac.uk.
