The panel will discuss the transformation of European education from a national to a supranational concern, highlighting the process and mechanisms through which the European Commission and the European business community constructed the idea of the “Europe of Knowledge” as a solution for Europe’s lack of competitiveness.
Meet our speakers and chair
Michelle Cini is Professor of European Politics in SPAIS at the University of Bristol. They have worked at the University of Bristol for over 25 years. They were initially appointed to the University of Bristol in 1991 as Jean Monnet Lecturer in European Community Studies. Michelle's research is primarily on the politics and policy-making of the European Union, focusing on areas including the politics of the European Commission, EU state aid policy and public ethics and lobbying.
Marina Cino Pagliarello () is a Visiting Fellow at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳'s European Institute, Lecturer in Political Economy at the Department of Government at Essex University, and Associate Lecturer at the UCL Department of Political Science. Prior to joining academia, Marina worked as education policy researcher and specialist with national/international organisations and governments for over 20 years. Previous qualifications include a PhD in European Studies from the London School of Economics, and an MSc in Economics of Arts and Culture from SDA Bocconi School of Management, and an MA in History from the University of Pisa. Since 2012, Marina has worked as Research Associate for ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Consulting, where she has co-led several projects on education for a wide range of clients, including the European Commission, CEDEFOP, the European Training Foundation, the British Council, and the UK Government.
Mareike Kleine () is Associate Professor in EU and International Politicsa at the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ European Institute. Her research interests include theories of international organisation and International Political Economy, informal and formal governance, the interplay of domestic politics and international institutions, negotiation theories and normative questions of global governance. Her book Informal Governance in the European Union (Cornell University Press 2013) shows how informal norms in the EU and other international organizations serve as a means to provide discretion to states facing unexpected domestic political shocks. Other work has appeared in journals such as International Theory, Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of European Public Policy, and the Review of International Organizations.
