NATO at 70: History, Politics and Challenges

Reflecting on NATO’s 70 anniversary, this round-table discussion scrutinised the challenges that the Alliance faces today in light of its long-term history and development.

Academics, security experts and members of NATO International Staff draw on a series of case studies as well as on their own personal experience to examine the newest historiographical trends and to evaluate today’s security environment and the role of NATO.

Speakers

Stella Adorf is a NATO International Civilian and has served as the Chief Historical Advisor to the Command Group at NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) since 2017. From 2011 to 2013 she worked at the Legal Office and then in Strategic Plans & Policy at HQ Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT).

James Ellison is Reader in International History at Queen Mary University London.

Linda Risso is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research in London and Consultant at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium.

Diego A. Ruiz Palmer is Special Adviser for Net Assessment to the NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning.

Piers Ludlow is Professor of International History and Deputy Head of Department, Department of International History, ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳.
