The Commonwealth Law Ministers law week adopted a new model law to strengthen data protection rules. The process of developing the model provisions began in 2019 with a comparative review of the existing model laws and other international and regional data protection instruments authored by Dr Orla Lynskey and Judith Rauhofer (Edinburgh Law School). The expert working group, nominated by Commonwealth countries and assisted by Dr Lynskey and Ms Rauhofer, then used this text to reach agreement in principle on model laws which were then drafted by Lynskey and Rauhofer. Following multiple rounds of revisions, the working group finalised and approved the complex text before its adoption by Commonwealth law ministers in Mauritius in late November 2022.
