After the PhD

Since completing his PhD, Fabien has been teaching at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ (ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳100) and UCL (Urban Studies MSc), worked as a communications officer for the Migrants' Rights Network, as a research assistant for Prof Robin Mansell (researching the regulation of digital platforms and AI), and as a part-time postdoc for the DATACTIVE research project on civil society responses to big data and mass surveillance (University of Amsterdam). Fabien has been awarded an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship for the year 2018-2019 at the University of Birmingham, where he will be working with Dr Sara Fregonese in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. He will be turning his PhD into articles – on the meaning of radio encounters, the depoliticisation of "local peace" and the urban consequences of restrictive media regulation in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire – as well as a book project, more broadly considering the contested role of media in re-animating city life after conflict.
