Student Life in the Department

How do we enhance your student experience?

Throughout the year we hold a variety of academic and social events, find out more below.

Welcome Events

Welcome can be a total blur but it’s a great opportunity for you to meet not just with staff in the Department but to get to know the cohort. With Welcome Week we aim to start your time with us in the right way with a balance of opportunities to hear from the Department, your Academic Mentor and Programme Directors and each other.

Department Parties

Throughout the year we have a mid-term social each term, as well as a Winter Party in December and end of year party. These are great opportunities to relax, celebrate and catch up with students and staff in the Department and have some well deserved fun.

Wellbeing and Extracurricular Activities

Studying can be intense and over the course of the year we have plenty of extracurricular activities to give you the chance to mix with your peers – in previous year’s we’ve arranged walking tours, gallery visits, ice skating and more.

Programme Socials

Discover a sense of belonging within your academic program through our engaging program socials. These events provide a unique platform for you to connect with your peers who share similar academic interests and goals. Programme Directors and Reps work together to organise gatherings throughout the year and create cherished memories - from picnics, to pub evenings, film screenings, dinners and day trips.

MSc Common Room and Thursday Treats

Visit our cozy MSc Common Room on the 7th floor of Fawcett House, whether it’s to study or just unwind and relax. Every Thursday afternoon, we treat you to some tasty snacks to brighten your week.

Public Lectures

The Department of Media and Communications hosts a range of events, from large public lectures to smaller seminars, in person, online and hybrid, across a broad spectrum of topics relating to media and communications. Unless otherwise stated, our events are free and open to all.
