This year, the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Middle East Centre marks its 10th anniversary, and we want to invite you to take part in our celebration!
Since 2010, the Centre has grown to become a large, thriving and vibrant research community with deep connections across ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳, within the Middle East and North Africa, and internationally. While our plans for large lectures were put on hold, we still want to showcase and celebrate the work that has been achieved over the past decade. So we are going digital.
To see highlights of the last decade of the Centre's work, read our #MECat10 report here!
On Tuesday 15 December, 17:00–18:30 GMT, we will hold our final webinar of the year looking at some of the main challenges facing the region over the next few years, and how research should be adapting to address these areas, which include: ecological and demographic change, healthcare in the region, and decolonising the study of the 'Middle East'.
We will be joined by Associate Professor in Medical Anthropology at Rutgers University, Omar Dewachi, former Executive Director of Greenpeace MENA and activist, Zeina Khalil Hajj, and Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, Eve M. Troutt Powell.
There will be a live translation of the event into Arabic, and you can register to attend for free.
From 7–18 December, our online programme will also include:
- Our most popular blogs of the last 10 years
- Instagram video shorts from ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Middle East Centre staff and fellows reflecting on key moments in the past 10 years
- An exclusive episode of our 'Instant Coffee' podcast with renowned Middle East food experts Claudia Roden and Sami Zubaida
- The #MEC10 report, detailing a decade of the Centre's work
We are also very excited to launch an Arabic content project which will encourage and disseminate social sciences research by scholars working in Arabic and for an Arabic-speaking audience. An Arabic language MEC website will go live this month and original research content in Arabic will be greatly expanded.
Make sure you are following us on , and to keep up to date with our fortnight of activities!

Looking back at our first decade, we are proud of the Centre’s diverse contributions to the study and understanding of the region. We hope to continue to play our part and would like to thank all of you – students, partners, colleagues, funders and event attendees – for your continued support.
