Can you tell us about your background and why you chose to study the MPP programme at SPP?
As a senior civil servant belonging to the Indian Administrative Service, I have worked for the last nine years across numerous government departments including major infrastructure sectors like ports to regulatory departments like land revenue in the state of Kerala. My field experience has taught me the need to formulate policies better attuned to field realities.
I chose to study the MPP programme at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳’s School of Public Policy to learn evidence-based policy making skills, mainly, the ‘craft’ of formulating effective policies that will address the most pressing public policy challenges of our times such as climate change.
What are the highlights from Welcome and your first few weeks?
There were two highlights from the first few weeks of MPP programme that stood out. One was the MPP Treasure Hunt which was great fun, and a wonderful way to explore central London. Another highlight was the Academic Writing Skills sessions conducted by Delia Lloyd that helped us to polish our writing skills to gear ourselves up for the academic work at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳. The SPP Welcome Reception was also special as it brought the MPP and MPA students together under one roof.
What have you been most surprised to learn?
I was surprised to learn how similar, and at the same time how different, the civil services of different countries are structured and managed. From a public management perspective, I find this important as it allows me to learn from the best organisational practices that different countries follow. I gained this insight only because of the diversity of the MPP cohort.
What are you most looking forward to?
I am eagerly looking forward to applying for the annual student conference of the that SPP is a member of. It is a great opportunity to collaborate and learn from your peers. Additionally, it effectively complements the academic learning in the classroom.
What are your main objectives whilst you are at the SPP?
I have three main objectives for my studies at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳. Firstly, I wish to hone my professional skills by taking part in SPP’s Professional Skills Accelerator. Secondly, I aim to build my academic knowledge on various subjects that lay the foundation for effective policy formulation, particularly data analysis and utilization of behavioural science inputs. Thirdly, I want to learn from my peers, their perspectives and experience on global issues such as climate change.
What are your plans for your future after graduation?
I plan to work in the Government of India at a senior policy making level in the domains of finance, tech regulation and environmental policy. In the long run, I hope to design policy mechanisms which integrate ecosystem services with the larger economy and incorporate biodiversity into economic decision-making using technological solutions.
