About me

Amanda Sheely is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto.

Amanda was an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Policy from 2013-2023, and she was affiliated with the , the , and the .

Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, Amanda's research focuses on economically vulnerable families, with a primary focus on single mother families. In particular, she examines how the state’s treatment of families is contingent upon the characteristics of the places where they reside (country, state, locality), the families themselves (i.e. structure, size), as well as the characteristics of the mothers who head them (economic class, race/ethnicity, criminal record).

Amanda's research has been published in The ANNALS of Political and Social Science, Punishment & Society, Crime & Deviance, Social Work, and the Policy Studies Journal.
