Human Rights and Constitutionalism in Nepal

In recent years, Nepal has gone through its share of tragedies. It has experimented with liberalism and communism, and adopted an ambitious Constitution designed to usher the country from a Monarchy to a Republic, and from a unitary system to a federal structure. The Constitution enshrines a long list of rights, and the country has ratified most major international human rights treaties. However, the question that arises is: how democratic is this Constitution, and is it robust enough to guarantee basic freedoms such as the freedom of speech?

H.E. Dr Durga Bahadur Subedi, Ambassador of Nepal to the UK inaugurated the second 'South Asia Development' conference at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳. In his Opening Remarks, he spoke about the essence of regional cooperation and globalisation. The annual conference is organised by the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳SU South Asia Society, and is supported by the Centre.

The Centre organised the first-ever ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ South Asia Summit. David Gellner, Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford particpated on the panel 'Who are the Middle Class in South Asia?', and presented his research on Nepal's middle class. To listen to the podcast, click here.

The South Asia Centre supported the first 'South Asia Development' Conference hosted by the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳SU South Asia Society. Building on the essence of regional cooperation and globalisation, the Centre was delighted to welcome H.E. Dr Durga Bahadur Subedi, Ambassador of Nepal to the UK to speak on 'Nationalism' with Ms Hina Rabbani Khar (Pakistan Peoples Party). Dr Subedi also generously hosted a dinner for delegates and guests at the Nepal Embassy later in the evening.

The Centre was delighted to welcome former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai for a discussion on the launch of his 'Naya Shakti Party', and its perspective for Nepal's future. The event was chaired by Professor Michael Hutt (SOAS), and Dr Dan Hirslund (University of Copenhagen) was Discussant. The event was live-streamed in Nepal by members of the Naya Shakti Party, where more than a thousand viewers watched online despite the time difference of 6 hours.
