Welcome to the website of the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Department of Statistics.  We hope you find the information useful whether you are a prospective or current student, one of our alumni, or simply interested in learning more about our faculty, research and events.

The Department is home to internationally respected experts in statistics and data science. Maintaining and advancing our leading reputation for teaching and research is our top priority. At the same time, we aim to provide a supportive, friendly and informal environment for all students and staff.

The Department has grown in recent years, especially in the area of data science which is a key priority for education and research in the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳2030 strategy.  We aim to play a leading role in fostering the study of data science and new forms of data, with a focus on its social, economic, and political aspects.

We offer a vibrant environment with specialisms in four main areas: data science, probability in finance and insurance, social statistics, and time series and statistical learning. We welcome applications for PhD study in any of these fields.

Our research expertise is reflected in our teaching programmes.  At undergraduate level, we currently offer the BSc Actuarial ScienceBSc Actuarial Science with a placement year, BSc Data Science and BSc Mathematics, Statistics and Business. In 2021 we launched the BSc Data Science which combines data science, machine learning, statistics and mathematics, with applications in the social sciences. At postgraduate level, we offer the MSc Data Science, MSc Quantitative Methods for Risk Management, MSc Statistics (with streams in Financial Statistics and Social Statistics) and in 2021 we launched the MSc Health Data Science jointly with the Department of Health Policy. 

Graduates from our programmes have gone on to work in a wide range of areas such as insurance, banking, accounting, finance, statistics, government, business consultancy or continued their studies with postgraduate degrees.  Many of our alumni return to the Department to take part in careers events where they share their experiences with our current students.  Alumni who would like to keep in touch can visit our .
