Maximilian Goehmann, PhD candidate in Information Systems and Innovation
Congratulations to Maximilian Goehmann, PhD candidate in Information Systems and Innovation, who has been awarded a 2025 Phelan US Centre PhD Summer Research Grant.
The summer research grants aim to encourage innovative research on the United States and to support students pursuing postgraduate research on topics related to the centre’s overall mission of promoting internationally oriented scholarship on America’s changing role in the world.
The grants provide support to the development of early career scholars at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ while also aiming to help with research activities with an award of £2,500.
Speaking about his research that the grant will support, Maximilian said, "My research focuses on ensuring the integrity of financial data for all participants, particularly automated trading systems engaging in financial markets—a key factor in maintaining free and efficient markets.
“A truly free market thrives on transparency and fair competition. However, when data inefficiencies distort price formation, they erode trust, reduce liquidity, and create regulatory blind spots that may be exploited. My study aims to strengthen financial oversight without imposing excessive constraints, ensuring that markets remain competitive, efficient, and resilient in an era of automation."
Reflecting on what the grant means for his PhD career, Maximilian said, “Being awarded this grant is particularly meaningful. It will allow me to investigate critical datasets and engage with policymakers in the US to drive meaningful discussions.
“The Phelan US Centre’s support will enable me to translate academic research into real-world policy recommendations, for which I am both grateful and excited. I look forward to producing insights that strengthen financial oversight to ensure future market resilience."
